How to get rid of split ends

Before & After

Are you tired of split ends and your hair looking dull, well here is how I got rid of mine and hopefully you can too!

The worst thing about split ends is the way it makes your hair look and feel. So I did a little research and tried a few things out, and this is what I found out.

Your hair usually has split ends because of towel drying, the brush you use, styling tools used, and the products you put on it (AKA shampoo, hair dye, perms, etc…)

So let us look into these and break it down to prevent more split ends from happening and get back to that youthful-looking hair we all want to have.

 What Are Split Ends?

In layman’s terms, broken hair. To be exact, it is fraying or separating the hair strands into 2 or more pieces on the same strand of hair.

It is usually from excessive stress on the hair from towel drying, products used, styling tools, brushes, even your lifestyle that can cause it. But the last one I won’t go into on this blog.

Towel Drying Your Hair

Don’t rub it, press it. Meaning your hair is at its most vulnerable while it is drying. I know we are all in a rush and don’t want to slow down, but if you want better-looking hair then slow down a bit and give this method a try.

I did it and notice a change in my hair in the first week. So instead of gathering your hair up in the towel and rubbing it like crazy try applying pressure to squeeze out the water and really it doesn’t take that much more time or you could just wrap your wet hair up in the towel and let it do all the work.

Blow-Drying

Just don’t do it, your hair will thank you. When you put heat from a blow dryer to your wet hair, especially the ends, it will cause more damage and that is what you don’t want.

The best thing you can do for your hair is to let it dry naturally if you can. Letting your hair dry 60-90% will lessen the damage or try using the cold setting on your blow dryer.

Styling Tools

They are as hot as the sun, so let it set. No, seriously turning your styling tools to the hottest setting won’t style your hair any faster or better all your doing is damaging and overheating your hair in the long run which will rob it of that healthy shine you are looking for, so cool it.

180 degrees or hotter is too hot for your hair but with that being said keep in mind that too cold can do even more damage because you’ll be taking twice as long on the same spot to get the results you want.

The Brush

Toss that brush too many teeth chewing on your hair at once. If you really can’t wait and have to brush your hair when it’s wet start off by using a wide-tooth comb start off at the bottom and work your way up snagging knots is no fun so go slow.

You can use a boar bristle brush for thin to medium hair, which will give you a smooth, silky shine to your hair. Use a nylon bristle brush for all hair lengths, it won’t snag your dry or wet hair as bad as others will.

I use two kinds of brushes, the Conair nylon bristle brush to get the knots out then a few strokes of a boar bristle brush to get those few flyaways back in place for that smooth look.

Shampoo & Conditioner

Too many to choose from, I know how you feel. Ok so if you didn’t know this let me tell you using the same brand of shampoo and conditioner over and over again can cause side effects like:

-dryness

-excess frizz

-hair color loss

-itchiness, hives especially from benzalkonium chloride-formulas

just to name a few.

Shampooing and conditioning your hair too much will also dry your hair out causing it to have, you guessed it split ends because it washes out the natural oils your hair needs.

Making your body overproduce the oils, so the more you wash the more you have to wash. A good rule of thumb for shampooing and conditioning your hair is:

-dry hair= 2 times a week

-oily hair= daily (unfortunately your body is already overproducing the oils)

-normal hair= whenever it needs it (I go 3 days in between shampooing)

Now that doesn’t give you permission not to take a shower or bath and get yourself cleaned up it just means don’t get your hair wet even if you don’t shampoo it the water will strip away the oils.

Now, with that being said, time to switch up your brands of shampoo and conditioner. Once you finished that bottle your using now switch to a different one (not from the same brand like Suave coconut to Suave white rain) I mean like say from Suave to Pantene.

I myself have normal hair type so I like to use “Pantene daily moisture renewal and TRESemmé luxurious moisture” in the wintertime to weigh my hair down from the static of dryness adding moisture to my hair

then I switch it to one’s like Garnier or Nexxus in the summer months for lightness to add bounce. I have thick, long, normal hair whereas my friend has thinned, oily hair, and she prefers the Suave in the summer and Herbal Essences.

Side Note

At the time of writing this, I just ordered a brand called “wow” to help grow my hair out that a friend recommended to me.

If you want to know if it worked see my blog “How To Grow Longer Hair”, which will be an ongoing blog till I find one that works the best.

Coloring, Perms

Do I even need to say it? I guess so! Ok, we all know that using dyes and perms on your hair is by far the worst thing you can do.

Using all those chemicals on your hair will not only dry it out, cause it to become brittle, change the feel of your hair, but of course, it will cause those dang split-ends to name a few.

But if you must go there then try to be kind to your hair and go with one that is rich in moisture that can help reduce split-ends or even better look into dying your hair the natural way there are a lot of ways out there to do just that on the web you just have to look for them.

Care For It

So, all in all, there are a lot of things you can try to get rid of your split-ends. But I’m afraid I have to break the bad news to you once you have them you can’t just use some magical shampoo or hair serum that will make them go away completely.

The only way to do that is by cutting them off or like I like to call it a trim. You don’t have to cut a lot of your hair off, just a bit to get rid of the ends that are split. Then on your own, you can cut them with a pair of small scissors

or as I do I’ll trim about half an inch off at the beginning of summer, tie my hair into a ponytail and any split-ends I see I trim them.

Now with that being said, there are things you can use to temporarily mask the appearance of split-ends by using a leave-in-conditioner during the day, at night using a silk pillow, and loosely tying your hair back.

Using essential oils like lavender for hydration and breakage control or cedarwood for growth, strength, and to prevent frizz.

Mainly what your hair is lacking is biotin, folic acid, and keratin, which help to keep it from breaking and creating split-ends.

All the products I have links or pictures of are items I have used or know someone that has used to get the results they got.

So on that note, I wish you all the best in mending the strands of your broken split-ends. And if you liked this one, just wait till I write about how I finally found a product that got rid of my adult acne you won’t believe what it is I’m using.
